~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~04/08/05: HELP! Was Deane Palmer's First Name Really Norman?
Bill Shay, BHS '59, has been meticulously researching some facts for my Camp Herrick website. One of our contemporaries at Camp Herrick was Deane Palmer BHS '60, who happens to be one of our deceased classmates. We are trying to establish the date and details of his death. It seems his first name might actually have been Norman. I have an obituary for a Norman Deane Palmer who died in Missouri in 1985, and who worked at GE. There was a Joan E. Palmer in BHS '58. Was she his sister? I think Deane lived in Centerville, not sure. I know he worked at GE in the early sixties because I saw him there.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~4th MEETING of the BHS CLASS of 1960 REUNION COMMITTEE
(Reunion to be held in early fall, 2005)
10/24/04: The fourth meeting of the BHS Class of 1960 45th Reunion Committee was held on Friday, October 22, 2004.
Present: Kathy Healey, Co-Chair; Andrea (Raymond) Stackpole, Secretary; Jeanne (LeClair) Cammett; Lori (Wait) Dupont; Rowena (Robinson) Flynn; Barbara (Dumphy) Hoar; Ann Mahoney; and Bill Nisbet, Co-Chair.
There was no correspondence to discuss. If you would like to write to the committee, here is the address:

Carol (Thibodeau) Marciano has volunteered to help Rowena (Robinson) Flynn on the Publicity Subcommittee.
Because the feedback preferences for time of year are running 2 to 1 in favor of fall over summer, after discussion, we narrowed the dates to September 24, October 1, and October 22, 2005 of course. The gap in the last two dates was in consideration of the Jewish holidays.
We have narrowed the format of the reunion to bistro tables interspersed with small regular tables, laid out for easier mingling. Substantial hors d'oeuvres followed by a desert selection, from several serving stations scattered around the room, spread over several hours, is in favor right now, rather than a large buffet. There is at least one more possible reunion location to be investigated before these decisions are final.
The dress will be "Casual Classic," which means you can wear about anything you feel comfortable in, including suits and ties, no ties, slacks, dresses, gowns, whatever. Specifically excluded will be blue jeans, shorts, T-shirts, and bare feet.
We want to hire a live band that can play dance music and the oldies. Selecting a band is the most important decision we will make for a successful reunion. The committee welcomes any suggestions from our classmates, and in fact would like to hear your thoughts on various bands you may have seen recently. We need to know their availability for the dates mentioned above and the cost for them to play for four hours.You have helped shape the reunion coming up in 2005. We appreciated your opinion on various ideas. Thanks.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~3rd MEETING of the BHS CLASS of 1960 REUNION COMMITTEE
(Reunion to be held sometime in 2005)
09/21/04: The third meeting of the BHS Class of 1960 45th Reunion Committee was held on Friday, September 10, 2004. There were many new faces, which we were glad to see. Some new ideas were advanced as a result (see below).
Present: Jeanne (LeClair) Cammett, Ray Charland, Lori (Wait) Dupont, Rowena (Robinson) Flynn, Barbara (Dumphy) Hoar, Kathy Healey, Ann Mahoney, Carol (Thibodeau) Marciano, Bill Nisbet, Andrea (Raymond) Stackpole, and Bill Stanley
Feedback comments from classmates were discussed, including some negative and positive aspects of the 2001 "41+1" reunion. These included: (1) The loudness of the DJ made it necessary for some people, trying to reconnect with classmates not seen for ages, had to actually move their conversations out of the room to Angelica's lobby, In some cases, even outdoors to the parking lot. (2) Someone noted that people were not ready to sit down when requested. This probably means they would have preferred to stand around and talk longer than "allowed." (3) Many said it was perfect as is. Keep the next one the same. Why fool around with a winner? (4) One acute insight was that the large tables forced the group to break up into groups of eight or ten, a configuration that tended to remain all evening. This prevented easy communication with people at other tables. Solutions to some of these problems were proposed.
Preferences for time of year seem to be running 2 to 1 in favor of fall over summer. Summer was originally chosen because of the abundance of activities already in place during Beverly Homecoming.
New ideas discussed included: (1) Have the reunion at the old BHS (now Brisco). (2) Use bistro tables, rather than large round or banquet tables, for easier mingling. (3) Serve really substantial hors d'oeuvres over several hours, rather than a large buffet. (4) Hire a live band that can play dance music and the oldies, an alternative to a disc jockey. (5) Hold the reunion at a hotel, so reservations can be made for classmates traveling a great distance, or for those who want to relax and have a few drinks and not have to drive home afterward.
We have formed a committee to check out variuos places for rooms, function halls, menus, and price comparisons. We have also formed a publicity committee, and a Newsletter committee.
We are investigating various bands as an alternative to disc jockeys.
You can help shape the reunion coming up in 2005. Give us your opinion on these new ideas.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~2nd MEETING of the NEW BHS CLASS of 1960 REUNION COMMITTEE
(Reunion to be held sometime in 2005)
08/21/04: The second meeting of the BHS Class of 1960 45th Reunion Committee was held on Friday, June 18, 2004. Among other things, we discussed various ideas and options for the 45th reunion to be held sometime in 2005. You can help shape the reunion coming up in 2005. Click Here to See How!.
Also, there was a discussion about the upcoming Picnic in the Park. This year a rain location was available. There was also some discussion on producing a hardcopy newsletter particularly for those classmates who do not have email.
Committee members in attendance were Kathy Healey, Bill Nisbet, Andrea (Stackpole) Raymond, Bill Stanley, and Doreen (Thompson) and Ray Charland.

BEVERLY HIGH ALUMNI Site Temporarily Down
(A Solution is in Progress)
02/08/04: That site (beverlyhighalumni.com) has been down for several days. It is a not a technical issue but rather a financial one. Several of us, including myself, are working on resolving this. At the moment it looks like it will be "off the air" for a few days at the least. A solution is in progress; it is being attended to. Thanks for your patience. [NOTE: I noticed this site was back online on 02/14/04 - could have been a day or so sooner...don't know.]
This is the first Friday night of Beverly Homecoming Week. If you were ever a member of the Beverly High School Class of 1958, 1959, 1960, 1961, or 1962 you are specifically invited. In actual fact, everyone is welcome. This event is completely free, including the parking after 3:00 p.m. in the afternoon. Refreshments are available at Dick & June's Ice Cream stand. Some of the people that showed up in the past actually brought a picnic lunch. Please feel free to do so. Most treat this like an old fashioned gab fest. Meet some old friends; make some new friends. You might want your own folding chairs, little tables, and what ever else you need for comfort. There are picnic tables there, but they cannot be moved, so they cannot be grouped together.

Snow Train to Vermont
This is NOT an official BHS Class of 1960 activity, but rather an idea a few of your classmates were talking about to break up the long winter with a little fun. There is a February snow train trip to Vermont, sponsored by the Massachusetts Bay Railroad Enthusiasts. If you wish to participate you must order the tickets from them.
Massachusetts Bay Railroad Enthusiasts Website
According to the MBRRE, "Travel to the snow-covered foothills of southern Vermont aboard the Mass. Bay Railroad Enthusiasts' specially chartered Amtrak train, the VERMONT SNOW EXPRESS. Relax with family and friends as we traverse CSX Transportation's Boston main line from Boston and western suburbs to Palmer, Mass., and then head northward on the New England Central Railroad along the banks of the Connecticut River to Brattleboro and Bellows Falls, Vermont. Our train will consist of Amtrak intercity coaches and café cars with reclining seats and fold-down tray tables. All coaches are equipped with rest rooms. Light snacks and beverages will be available from the Amtrak Café cars, or you may bring your own picnic lunch or dinner. Our complimentary trip brochure, distributed on board, details scenic and historic points of interest along our route. Our return to Boston will be at approximately 9:00 P.M., subject to operating conditions. The VERMONT SNOW EXPRESS will run one day only, rain, snow or shine."
There are quite a few optional activities available during a four-hour stopover in Brattleboro. You must sign up for them in advance. Transportation to activity locations is included in the option price. Contrary to the previous notice in this space, the private observation car, Caritas, will be in the consist. There will not be any regular commuter day cars, just modern, comfortable Amtrak intercity coaches. You can check out all the details here:
SNOW TRAIN TO VERMONT (this coming February 22, 2003)
If you want to sit with friends you must order the tickets as a group. I noticed from last year's write-up for the same trip that some activities are sold out quite soon. I suggest that if you are at all interested, you should check this out and sign up as soon as possible.
Unfortunately, Ann and I will not be able to participate as she will be on beeper duty that weekend.

"CLASS of '60 TURNS 60" PARTY
This is a great idea that is not going to take place due to a lack of interest...a shame to
waste that great name.

A few of us were tossing around the idea of holding a "Class
of '60 Turns 60" party or open house in early fall for classmates and their spouses
or friends. I imagine some of us are ready while others might not want to have it rubbed in (the
big SIX O, I mean). I see this as a daytime event, perhaps at someone's house or elsewhere,
with each family bringing something...potluck, with gas grill available, maybe.
This is in the talking stage right now - there are no plans yet...just testing the waters. Considering
the facts in the preceding notice, I'd say this isn't going to fly unless we hear from folks soon on this.
I have heard other suggestions that range from a large-group, low-cost trip to Las Vegas to an all day
cruise or fall foliage trip down the Merrimac River.
Let's hear from those that would attend something.

07/23/02 - The second, follow-up postcard inviting our classmates (BHS '60) to the "Picnic in
the Park" this coming August 2nd was mailed out today. There were 188 postcards in that batch.
The last mass mailing was 193. Although we have 20+ more email address this time around,
several others turned out to be invalid, making more eligible for a postcard. Also, I sent one
to everyone on last year's Reunion Committee so they would have a copy. Postage has gone up a
few cents since the last time, too.
(Bill Nisbet, Webmaster)
CLASS VOTES YES ON HAVING OUR OWN WEBSITE: If we are to have
a reunion in four years, it is very important that the class keep in touch. We
must keep our addresses, phone numbers, and especially our email addresses current.
Only one way to keep in touch was proposed to the class, and that was to sponsor
our own Web site. Again, by show of hands, the majority present voted yes for
this idea. Alternative ideas and specific details were not discussed. The purpose
of this Website is to help BHS '60 stay in touch and keep closer together, at
least until 2005, to help make the 45th reunion a great success. Nobody wants
to go through the work of locating everyone all over again in four years, especially
since the "lost" classmate list has been trimmed from around 150 to 64.

REPORT on 2004 42nd ANNUAL BEVERLY - FLORIDA REUNION
REPORT on 2003 41st ANNUAL BEVERLY - FLORIDA REUNION
03/31/03 - From Dave Tomeo BHS '65:
This is a duplicate of Dave Tomeo's [BHS '65] report he posted on the
Beverly High Alumni bulletin board regarding this year's
Beverly - Florida Reunion (posted with his permission by Bill Nisbet, Webmaster):
Comments: March 1, 2003, the 41st annual Beverly-Florida Reunion was held for the
first time at the Clearwater Country Club in Clearwater, Florida. It was a beautiful
Florida day that had sunshine and weather in the 80's. We had an excellent turnout
and a wonderful meal prepared by Chef Randall Tilton, formerly of Beverly.
When the social hour started at 10:30AM the bar was open and many in the crowd started
working on their Bloody Marys, seeing old friends, sharing stories and having allot
of laughs. By 12:30PM it was time to get down to business and eat. Many in the crowd
said it was the best meal they've had in years at these functions and the desert was
outstanding. John Carnevale started off with prayer and we had a moment of silence
for some of our Beverly friends that has passed on. When all that was finished we
had a fantastic lunch.
The next order of business was electing a new president and new officers. Dave Tomeo
was elected President, Judy (Greenleaf) Briggs, Secretary/Treasurer. Board Members
elected were Irene (Godbout) Laurie, Bruce Carnevale and Terry (Farmer) Mikszenas.
Judy (Greenleaf) Briggs is still after 28 years is the engine that makes this event
run. She's untiring and dedicated to keep this reunion alive and well.
After the officers were named the raffle began. There were many lucky winners who walked
away with some wonderful gifts. Many of the gifts were in the wine family. You can imagine
what gifts went first with this Beverly crowd. When the raffle was over about 3PM many
stayed around and continued conversations that were halted due to the festivities. We
were so pleased and proud to see so many happy faces and what wonderful things people
were saying about the whole event.
The Beverly-Florida officers and board members vowed that as good as this year was, they
said wait till next year. We hope to return to Clearwater Country Club with a bigger and
better program than this year. If you would like to be put on the mailing list for this
wonderful function please contact Dave Tomeo. (813) 263-3379 or E-Mail him at:

ANNOUNCING the 2004 BEVERLY - FLORIDA REUNION
07/12/03 - From Dave Tomeo BHS '65:
01/07/04 - From CarolLyn Manuel (BHS Class of 1984):
Hi BHS graduates and faculty!! My name is CarolLyn Manuel (BHS Class of 1984) and I am writing to you on behalf of the Beverly High School Boys Basketball Boosters. As some of you may know my father (Dave "Bippy" Manuel, class of 1963) was hired as the head coach for the boys basketball team this year. We have planned the "First Annual Basketball Alumni Night." And we would like to invite everyone to the event. This year we will be recognizing the only 2 undefeated teams at BHS and their head coaches. The 1962-1963 team which was coached by Mr. Chuck Taylor and the 1966-1967 team which was coached by Mr. Dick Batchelder. We encourage ALL alumni players, cheerleaders and coaches from all years to attend!!
Patricia (MacFarland) Till wrote me to say she is moving to Florida this coming
September 16, and she wishes to contact other classmates in that state. As you
know I do not give out addresses and phone numbers without permission, so this
message was snail-mailed to our Florida classmates without an email address,
and emailed for our Floridians with an email address. Perhaps you would like
to contact her and make her feel welcome? Pat does not have email. Email me
for her mailing address. (from Pat Till - through Bill Nisbet)| This Website is Sponsored by Generous Donations For This Purpose - Click to See Our Sponsors |
